Renato Sanches

Executive Summary

Renato Sanches turns 29 in August. He is currently without a club. A free agent since his Roma loan ended. He won Euro 2016 as a teenager. That remains the peak.

Playing Style and Key Attributes

Sanches is a carrier. Low centre of gravity, strong legs, right-footed but comfortable on both sides. He drives past first lines of pressure with a hop-and-burst motion that still looks dangerous in isolation. At Lille, under Galtier, he added defensive discipline — interceptions, counter-pressing, second-ball wins. The physical profile (176 cm, compact) lets him absorb contact and keep moving.

The problem is consistency. Hamstring, adductor, quad — the list of soft-tissue injuries is long. He misses chunks of every season. When fit, he offers verticality and ball progression that few midfielders match. Decision-making in the final third remains hit-and-miss. Shooting from distance is a weapon he uses too rarely. Set-piece delivery: average.

Career and Recent Context

Benfica to Bayern for €35 million (rising to €80m with add-ons) in 2016. Barely played under Ancelotti. Loan to Swansea — disastrous. Returned to Bayern, marginal. Lille revived him. 2020-21 title win, he was essential. PSG paid €15m plus add-ons in 2022. Two seasons, 33 league starts combined. Loan to Roma 2023-24: 14 Serie A starts, one goal, constant fitness management. Contract expired June 2026. No renewal.

Transfers and Outlook

Clubs know the talent. They also know the medical file. Interest this summer has been tentative — Turkey, Saudi Arabia, mid-table Ligue 1 sides. No concrete offers reported. A short-term deal with appearance-based incentives looks most likely. He needs a pre-season without interruption. If he gets one, a top-half European league is still within reach. If not, the career drifts toward a final payday elsewhere.
