Panagiotis Retsos

Executive Summary

Panagiotis Retsos is the Greek centre-back currently captaining Olympiacos Piraeus. Born on 9 August 1998, he carries the armband for his boyhood side. He rose through the local youth ranks before becoming the youngest captain in the club's history during 2017. After several moves across Europe, he returned to become a fixture in the defense.

Playing Style and Key Attributes

Retsos stands at 186 cm and operates primarily with his right foot. His game relies on high stamina—a trait that first caught the eye of managers during his early career. He reads the game well, using his positioning to intercept passes and block shots. However, he sometimes struggles with pace when tracking fast wingers. His tendency to commit fouls in dangerous areas also needs refinement.

Career and Recent Context

The defender moved to Bayer 04 Leverkusen in 2017 for a fee of €17.5m. His journey then included stints at Sheffield United, AS Saint-Étienne, and Hellas Verona. He returned in 2022 and has since maintained a starting role. In the 2026/2027 season, he has accumulated 450 minutes and scored one goal. He maintains an average rating of 7.59. He also remains a regular selection for the Greece national team.

Transfers and Outlook

He is currently under contract until 30 June 2028. The board has demanded over €15m for any potential move. This high asking tag has far deterred concrete bids so far.
