Mikel Merino

Executive Summary

Mikel Merino Zazón is a central midfielder for Arsenal FC, born on 22 June 1996. The Spain international joined the Emirates in August 2024 from Real Sociedad for €32m and is now operating in a midfield he has publicly described as “probably the best midfield in football” after the arrival of Bruno Guimaraes. He is left-footed, 188 cm, and has framed the competition for places with Declan Rice, Martin Zubimendi and the new signing as a driver of standards.

Playing Style and Key Attributes

Merino’s adaptability is repeatedly highlighted in his own comments on the Arsenal squad. He has played frequently in attack for the Gunners and is comfortable competing for minutes in a deep, quality-rich engine room. He presents the midfield group as a unit where every player can make a good shift, and stresses how internal competition raises the level. Public material available does not detail technical or physical traits beyond that positional flexibility and his role within the group.

Career and Recent Context

Merino came through CA Osasuna, moving from Youth to U19 in January 2012, then to Promesas in January 2013 and the first team in January 2014. He left Osasuna for Borussia Dortmund in January 2016 for €3.8m, moved to Newcastle United in July 2017 for €3m, returned to Newcastle in January 2018 for €7m, and went back to Borussia Dortmund in June 2018. He joined Real Sociedad in December 2018 for €12m and stayed until the move to Arsenal. Recent on-pitch moments include scoring for Arsenal against Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup in September 2026 and celebrating with a gesture related to lengua de signos británica (BSL) he had learned during an interview with deaf people for TNT Sports’ Sign Up – Into Football programme, a commitment he had made to use when he next scored.

Transfers and Outlook

Merino is under contract until 30 June 2028.
