Lisandro Martínez

Executive Summary

Lisandro Martínez, born on 18 January 1998, lines up as a left‑footed centre‑back for Manchester United. His contract runs until 30 June 2027. The 2026‑27 Champions League opener saw him score in a 4‑0 win over Sabah FK, a reminder that he can influence matches at both ends of the pitch.

Playing Style and Key Attributes

At 175 cm he relies on a low centre of gravity and sharp anticipation rather than aerial dominance. He reads opposition attacks a step early, turning interceptions into quick counter‑pressing moves. His left foot delivers crisp short passes and the occasional long diagonal that splits high lines, while his timing on set pieces makes him a genuine goal threat. A vocal presence, he does not hesitate to challenge officials — his post‑derby VAR critique showed that leadership translates into organisational authority for the back four.

Career and Recent Context

He progressed through the CA Newell's Old Boys academy, moved to Defensa y Justicia in 2017‑18, then earned a €7 m switch to Ajax Amsterdam in January 2019 where he collected domestic doubles. United paid €57.4 m for him in July 2022 and he has since become a fixture in a side that now contests the Champions League. The 2022 World Cup final forced him off with a heavy knock, yet he left the stadium without protective gear, underscoring his resilience. This season he has already netted in Europe and produced a first‑half masterclass of interceptions in the Manchester derby, even as the team fell 1‑0 after a controversial Haaland goal.

Transfers and Outlook

With his deal secured until 2027 there is no public speculation linking him away from Old Trafford; the club views him as a cornerstone of the defensive rebuild.
