José Cifuentes

Executive Summary

José Adoni Cifuentes Charcopa, born on 12 March 1999, operates as a right-footed central midfielder for Rangers. The Ecuador international has spent the last three years looping between the Scottish club and a succession of loan spells — Cruzeiro, Aris Thessaloniki, and most recently Toronto FC — before returning in June 2026. His contract runs until the summer of 2027.

Playing Style and Key Attributes

Cifuentes profiles as a box-to-box option who can progress the ball through the middle third and arrive late in the opposition area. At LAFC he combined 14 goals and 20 assists across four MLS seasons, showing an eye for the final pass and the timing to join attacks from deep. Defensively he reads passing lanes well and uses his low centre of gravity to win duels despite a modest 178 cm frame. The main question mark remains consistency over a full 90 minutes; his recent loan minutes have come in bursts rather than sustained runs.

Career and Recent Context

He broke through at Universidad Católica in Quito, shuttling on loan to América de Quito several times before a €2.7 million move took him to Los Angeles FC in January 2020. Four productive years followed, crowned by the 2022 Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup double plus a run to the CONCACAF Champions League final. Rangers paid roughly €1.4 million in August 2023, but he managed only 20 appearances across two Scottish campaigns.

Transfers and Outlook

Rangers hold his registration until 2027 and will decide whether to reintegrate him under the current manager or seek another temporary exit in January. MLS clubs retain interest given his Green Card status and proven track record, while a return to South America or a second spell with Aris cannot be ruled out. Much depends on whether the coaching staff view his profile as a fit for the domestic and European load ahead.
