Giovanni Leoni

Executive Summary

Giovanni Leoni, born on 21 December 2006, is an Italian centre‑back for Liverpool FC. The 196 cm, right‑footed defender is contracted until 30 June 2031. He is expected to return to training during the September international break.

Playing Style and Key Attributes

Leoni uses his stature to dominate aerial battles while his stride allows him to step out and close gaps. Liverpool’s coaching staff value his aggression and willingness to engage opponents in one‑on‑one duels. The lay‑off has dulled his timing, so regaining sharpness will be essential.

Career and Recent Context

A January 2024 move to UC Sampdoria cost Liverpool €1.5 million, followed by a brief return to Padova and a €7.7 million transfer to Parma in August 2024, where he logged 17 Serie A appearances and scored once. Liverpool secured his services in August 2025 for €29.4 million; his debut came in the Carabao Cup win over Southampton, where a challenge caused an ACL rupture. Since then he has spent twelve months in rehabilitation, edging toward a full return.

Transfers and Outlook

His long‑term contract and the scarcity of tall, mobile centre‑backs make him an attractive asset for clubs seeking a future‑proof defensive option. While Liverpool intend to integrate him gradually under Andoni Iraola, reports suggest a handful of Premier League rivals are monitoring his recovery.
