Érik Lira

Executive Summary

Érik Antonio Lira Méndez, born 2000-05-08, is a Mexican defensive midfielder currently playing for CD Cruz Azul. He is a 2026 World Cup standout and is now on the verge of leaving Liga MX after an agreement with AS Monaco. The move is advanced enough that he skipped the club’s trip to Aguascalientes for the match against Necaxa and is expected to travel to France for a medical revision.

Playing Style and Key Attributes

He is right-footed and 172 cm. Filipe Luis has spoken openly about him since his time at Flamengo, saying he has the level to play in Europe and recalling that he once put a man-marker on him, something he almost never does. Luis describes him as top, top, top, top, top. In the Leagues Cup 2026 meeting with New York City FC he provided the assist for Omar Campos’ attempt, showing his involvement in build-up from deep.

Career and Recent Context

The path began in the UNAM Pumas system, with a step to UNAM Pumas U17 in January 2016 and then to Club Necaxa U19 in January 2018. He returned to UNAM Pumas in January 2020. He quickly became a regular starter, later assumed the captain’s armband and became a dressing-room reference. During his spell he collected Liga MX, the Copa de Campeones de Concacaf, the Supercopa de la Liga MX and the Campeón de Campeones. Consolidation in Clausura 2026 and four starts for Mexico at the World Cup accelerated the European interest.
