Assane Diao

Executive Summary

Assane Diao Diaoune is a Senegal international left winger born on 7 September 2005. He plays for Como 1907 and is in the middle of his first Champions League campaign. The moment that defined his early months in Serie A came on 10 September 2026, when he scored on his Champions League debut in Como’s 4-1 win over RB Leipzig. The goal capped a night that Como approached with their usual style and composure.

Playing Style and Key Attributes

Diao operates as a left winger and is right-footed. He stands at 185 cm. Sources describe an explosive start to life in Serie A after his move from Real Betis, with eight goals from 15 appearances before the end of the 2024-25 season. He is noted for a big shot that extended Como’s lead against Leipzig and for keeping his composure on a historic occasion. Competition for places in Como’s attack is stiff, with Jesus Rodriguez, Nico Paz, Martin Baturina, Nicolas Kuhn and Jayden Addai around him.

Career and Recent Context

Diao came through the Spanish youth system. He moved from CD Badajoz U19 to CP Flecha Negra U19 in January 2019, then to Balón de Cádiz Youth in January 2020, and joined Real Betis Balompié Youth in January 2021. He progressed to Real Betis Balompié U19 in January 2022 and to Betis Deportivo Balompié the same month.

Injuries disrupted his first full season. A foot fracture followed by a thigh strain limited him to 17 league outings in 2025-26. He returned for Europe and scored on his Champions League debut against Leipzig.

Transfers and Outlook

Interest is building in Italy and abroad. Atalanta have been linked with a move, with Maurizio Sarri reportedly considering him, alongside reported interest from Galatasaray and Roma. Everton made a bid in June in the region of £38.8m, which was rejected, and have since made a fresh approach to enquire about his situation. Como do not consider Diao up for sale but will reportedly negotiate if an enticing offer arrives.

He is contracted until 30 June 2029.
